Four female students from Jamila Bouhired School (the third cycle for girls) came up with a method for purifying water by removing impurities from it, using activated carbon.

The project supervisor, teacher Maryam Hassan Al-Dhabahi, told «Emirates Today»: "The project was implemented by: Hoor Saeed Al Zaabi, Wassef Saeed Al Zaabi, Aisha Saeed Al Zaabi, and Shawq Hassan Al-Shurafa, to contribute to supporting the preservation of water resources, and enhancing their suitability for use in irrigating gardens. crops and cleaning.

Al-Dabahi pointed out that treating sewage water and transforming it into a basic material to remove pollutants and impurities, which is active carbon, eliminates the need to import it from abroad, as it costs huge amounts of money.

On the project implementation mechanism, Al-Dhabahi explained that the team of female students carried out a process of research and exploration with various sources of energy, and focused on agricultural waste, especially as it is an urgent environmental and economic necessity, the most important of which is the date palm and its products.

She pointed out that the process of extracting impurities from water using activated carbon took no more than three days, and then we used this water to irrigate the plant for three months to notice the difference.

Al-Dabbahi said: "The project aims to provide active carbon from the date kernel, which is abundant in the UAE at a lower cost, and has impressive results in purifying water from lead ions, impurities and organic components, as effective as the well-known active carbon."

She stated that the project was selected from among dozens of projects to be presented at the National Science, Technology and Innovation Festival, which was recently organized by the Ministry of Education at Expo 2020 Dubai, and the project won the admiration of the jury and guests.
