The split between the Latvian majority and the Russian minority – which makes up about a third of the population – is widening in Latvia.

Prime Minister Krisjanis Karin's and his New Unity party's hard line against Russia helped give him electoral victory in Saturday's election.

Among other things, it has been decided that only Latvian will be spoken in all schools and preschools.

"The government creates contradictions"

At the same time, the radical pro-Russian Stability party entered parliament, a party which, among other things, opposes stopping Russians at the Latvian border. 

- The government creates contradictions between different areas and different groups, says Mihail Sabatov, who lives in eastern Latvia on the Russian border.
