Some of Easter Island's famous statues have been damaged in a 100-hectare forest fire that raged on the island. The World Heritage area around the Rano Raraku volcano is one of the worst affected.
- The damage caused by the fire cannot be undone, says the island's mayor Pedro Edmunds to local media.
Easter Island belongs to Chile and receives its main income from tourism.
In August, the island reopened to travelers after being closed for two years due to the corona pandemic.
