• Several viral tweets denounce the investigation into suspected sabotage of the Nordtream 1 and 2 gas pipelines "conducted by NATO, which is not neutral".

  • But this investigation is conducted jointly by the police, navy and intelligence services of neighboring countries: Sweden, Germany and Denmark.

  • In a press conference on September 30, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the organization would cooperate in the investigation by sharing intelligence.

Barely begun, the investigation into suspicions of sabotage of the Nordstream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which connect Russia to Germany in the Baltic Sea, is already accused of bias.

In a viral tweet, shared nearly 3,000 times, a user points out that “the investigation carried out by NATO is not neutral”.

Another post explains that "it is ultimately NATO that will lead the investigation into the sabotage of NordStream while the body of clues would point to an American or NATO intervention".

And concludes: “We cannot say that this is a team that can produce an objective report.

It was from a sequence on LCI, October 4, 2022, that this statement became particularly viral.

In the program "24h Pujadas", the former brigadier general Henri Pinard-Legry gives his opinion on the conduct of the investigation: "Sweden wants to join NATO, Denmark is there.

[…] There, it is NATO which will carry out an investigation whereas the body of indices would tend to direct us towards a rather American or at least NATO intervention.

However, NATO is not in charge of the investigation into the sabotage of the Nordstream gas pipelines.

It is carried out jointly by the services of neighboring countries: Sweden, Germany and Denmark.

As a reminder, NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a political and military alliance of 30 countries aimed at "guaranteeing the security of its members", Germany and Denmark are part of it and Sweden has asked its accession in June 2022, a strategic shift linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

When contacted, the German Interior Ministry told us about the system: a joint team, made up of investigators from the three countries, was formed under European Union law.

"We must reveal the facts behind this serious attack against a European energy infrastructure", maintained, in a statement received by email, Nancy Feaser, the German Minister of the Interior, which will require "the combined expertise of the services of the navy, police and intelligence.

With Poland, these three countries have also decided to strengthen and coordinate their maritime patrols to "maximize our presence at sea", adds the German Interior Minister.

NATO will share information

Asked about its participation in the investigation, NATO referred us to “the national authorities concerned”.

And to the remarks made during a press conference on September 30 by the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.

He assured that the allies will defend their strategic infrastructure and participate in the ongoing investigation to "determine who is behind these attacks".

This collaboration will take the form of information sharing through data collected by the ships or aircraft of member countries of the Alliance and present in the area.

“We are going to intensify our sharing of information,” said Jens Stoltenberg, in particular information collected by NATO's single maritime command (Marcom), located in Northwood in the United Kingdom.

"We are also reviewing some of the data collected over the past few weeks and months to see if we can uncover anything related to the attacks on the two pipelines," he added.
