The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) said that the US State Department has approved a possible deal to sell to Kuwait a surface-to-air missile system, a medium-range air defense system and related equipment to Kuwait at an estimated value of three billion dollars.

"The potential deal will improve Kuwait's ability to confront current and future threats by enhancing its ability to defend itself against regional malicious actors, and improving interoperability with systems operated by US forces and other Gulf states," the Pentagon added in a statement on Thursday.

The Pentagon indicated that the primary contracting party will be Raytheon Missile and Defense Corporation.

According to Reuters on similar deals, the approval of the US State Department does not mean that the deal has been completed or that negotiations are over, but the notification to Congress is the first official notification that it is in progress.

It is noteworthy that in April 2021, Kuwait renewed the military cooperation treaty with the United States, and the treaty concluded in 1991 allows American forces to use Kuwaiti facilities and station American forces and equipment in the country for another 10 years.
