15 bodies, some charred, found on a beach in western Libya

Fifteen bodies, some of them charred, were found on the coast of the city of Sabratha in western Libya, the Libyan Red Crescent announced on Friday, while human rights activists confirmed that the bodies belonged to illegal immigrants.

The Libyan Red Crescent said in a statement, "After receiving a report from the local authorities that there were charred bodies on board a boat and 15 intact bodies outside the boat, the volunteers of the Libyan Red Crescent, Sabratha branch, moved to the place, and all the bodies were recovered and placed in the hospital refrigerator to complete the rest of the legal procedures."

The Red Crescent did not talk about the identity of the victims or the cause of their death, but human rights activists confirmed on social networks that the bodies belonged to illegal immigrants.

Local media reported that the boat's passengers, most of whom were Africans, were killed Thursday night by gunfire after an argument between smugglers.

Then a group of smugglers set the boat on fire on Friday, according to the same sources.

Pictures spread on social networks, presented as pictures of the damaged boat, from which thick black smoke was emerging.

Verification of the information with the authorities was not immediately possible.
