The investigation is progressing after the death of an 18-year-old young woman during exchanges of fire with the police in Grenoble, on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.

The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) was seized and the prosecution opened an investigation for "attempted murder of persons holding public authority" and "refusal to comply".

The three police officers on patrol were heard in police custody for having used their weapon, indicates AFP.

They left at 7:30 p.m.;

said a source familiar with the matter.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle, who allegedly opened fire, was also taken into custody, according to the prosecution.

According to police sources, this 30-year-old man of Moroccan nationality was sentenced in 2012 to eight years in prison for shooting at police officers near Avignon during a "coup de force", while he was wanted. for robbery.

He was also known at that time for drug trafficking, theft, concealment and weapons offences.

A suspect with a heavy criminal record

Released from prison in 2020, he has since been the subject of several procedures (violence with weapons, prohibited carrying of weapons) and a criminal search warrant for having walked in the streets of La-Tour-du-Pin ( Isère) with an assault rifle, after having also been arrested in possession of a 357 Magnum in Bourgoin-Jallieu (Isère).

Still from a police source, stating that searches took place on Wednesday, he was under an OQTF (obligation to leave French territory).

He was also banned from staying in the Vaucluse, adds the source familiar with the matter.

The victim hit in the neck

The victim was killed while in the getaway car to escape police control.

"The police officers of the Grenoble police station had to face a refusal to comply and shots fired by the driver of the vehicle who refused to stop, leading them to retaliate", detailed the Grenoble prosecutor Eric Vaillant in a statement.

This young woman from Salon-de-Provence "died as a result of a shot that hit her in the neck", while the driver was injured without his life being in danger.

Grenoble faces a wave of violence

The city has experienced a dozen shootings since the end of June, sometimes involving the police, according to the departmental directorate of public security (DDSP).

The latest was last weekend.

Four men were chased by the police after opening fire in front of a bar in the Saint-Bruno district, northwest of Grenoble.

One of them, 34, armed with a Kalashnikov, was injured by the police who fired three times because he “would have targeted them” during the chase, according to the prosecution.

The suspect was indicted on Tuesday for "attempted murder in an organized gang and on persons holding public authority", according to the same source.

Drug trafficking in the sights of the authorities

The director of the DDSP, Fabienne Lewandowski, underlined this Wednesday with AFP the "connotation linked to narcotics" of these latest cases, not commenting at this stage on that of Tuesday.

She confirms that “there are always turf wars in a business as lucrative as drug trafficking”.

She also notices "an increase in the use of heavy weapons during settling of scores against the background of narcotics".

The fight against this traffic is a "priority" alongside the prosecution and "we have multiplied by 2.5 the number of cases handled" since 2021.
