• The investigation opened against a police officer who had killed a young woman during an anti-drug operation in early September in Rennes has been dismissed.

  • The IGPN report concluded that the integrity of the police officer who fired the fatal shot had been threatened.

  • A judicial investigation has also been opened against the driver for attempted murder and manslaughter.

The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) has released the conclusions of its report.

A month after the shooting death of a 22-year-old young woman during an anti-drug operation in Rennes, the police cleared the Nantes BRI agent responsible for the fatal shooting.

"The investigations carried out led to the closing without follow-up by the prosecution of the procedure for intentional violence resulting in death without the intention of giving it," said Philippe Astruc, public prosecutor of Rennes.

The tragedy took place on the night of September 6 to 7 on the exit ramp from the ring road leading to the Lorient road.

Wanting to intercept a vehicle in which they suspected the presence of narcotics, the police had erected a roadblock.

But the driver had refused to comply and tried to force the passage, rushing on one of the police officers.

The latter had replied by shooting in the direction of the vehicle.

The bullet then ricocheted, fatally hitting the passenger.

Driver charged with manslaughter

According to the prosecution, the IGPN investigation concluded that the physical integrity of the police officer who fired the shot had been "threatened by the Peugeot 208 vehicle launched in his direction" and that his shot therefore appeared "to be able to take place". within the legal framework”.

"These conclusions are in line with those drawn from the rehearsal carried out by the public prosecutor immediately after the facts", added Philippe Astruc.

In this case, a judicial investigation has also been opened against the driver of the car, a man from Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray (Seine-Maritime) who is already well known to the courts.

He is being prosecuted for "attempted murder of a person holding public authority", "aggravated manslaughter" and "refusal to obey a summons to stop directly exposing others to the risk of death or infirmity". .

The victim's family had filed a manslaughter charge against him.

“She was received by the public prosecutor of Rennes and informed, as well as his counsel, of the orientation of these two procedures”, concludes the prosecution.
