Psychiatric ambulances are already available in big cities in Sweden, but now this will be tested for the first time in smaller cities.

- A psychiatric ambulance moves emergency psychiatry closer to the residents.

Emergency care of psychiatric patients becomes smoother with the specialist know-how on site in the ambulance.

This is exciting development work that can raise the quality for a vulnerable patient group, says Roland Gustbée (M), chairman of the health and medical care board.

Want to increase cooperation with mental health care

In the ambulance, there will be an ambulance nurse on site but also a psychiatric resource.

The hope is that the psychiatry ambulance will increase cooperation between the ambulance service and the emergency psychiatric unit.

- We can increase each other's competence, but above all improve for the patient.

That they get to meet someone who has experience with mental illness and end up at the right level of care straight away.

It can reduce the stigma and provide the right care, says Andreas Källsson, who represents psychiatry in the project.

If psychiatric care is needed, a psychiatric resource will be picked up by an ambulance.

SOS Alarm, which receives the alarm calls, assesses whether such a resource is needed or not.
