Mexico: an armed attack in the south of the country kills 18

The Mexican town of San Miguel Totolapan is located in an area under the influence of several organized crime groups.

A group of men appeared and opened fire in the street, riddled with bullets several buildings, in the state of Guerrero.

Eighteen people were killed and at least twenty others injured.

The events took place on Wednesday, October 5 in the afternoon in the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan in a mountainous area of ​​Tierra Caliente.

Soon after, the attack was claimed on social media by a cartel named "Los Tequileros", drug traffickers from the state of Jalisco, allied with the powerful Jalisco Nueva Generacion cartel.

It would be a settling of scores and this killing would in fact be a threat addressed to another powerful drug cartel: the Michoacán family, present in Tierra Caliente for decades.

The attack appeared to be directed against the city authorities.

Police report that the municipal palace has numerous bullet holes as well as the personal home of mayor Conrado Mendoza Almeda.

The latter was killed in the shooting as well as his father, a former local politician and several police officers.

Red zone

This is not the first time that San Miguel Totolapan has been the scene of this type of confrontation between cartels.

Several attacks have already taken place there in recent years.

This small town of 20,000 inhabitants is in a dangerous and extremely complicated area.

It is the bastion of the mafias and organized crime which dispute the territory and the traffic, since it is on the drug route which arrives from the Pacific.
