"Sampaoli has signed until June 30, 2024 and will lead his first training this (Thursday) evening at 6:30 p.m.," the club said in a statement.

Sampaoli finds the bench of Sevilla which he had already occupied during the 2016/2017 season before taking charge of the Argentine national team.

The 62-year-old technician had been free since leaving Olympique de Marseille last July.

Before joining the Albiceleste, Sampaoli had left the Andalusian team in fourth place in La Liga and led them to the knockout stages of the Champions League (eliminated 2-1, 0-2 by Leicester).

The debacle in front of Borussia Dortmund (4-1) at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium was fatal to former Spain coach Lopetegui, who was sacked in the process, paving the way for the arrival of the former coach of the Om.

The six-time Europa League winners (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020) had a chaotic start to the season which ended in four defeats, one victory and two draws in the league as well as two defeats and a draw in the Champions League.

Sampaoli inherits a team now stuck in 17th place with only five points out of a possible 21.

He will have to raise the bar on Saturday by the reception of Athletic Bilbao, current third in La Liga.
