Thirty-seven people, mostly children, died in Thailand after a former policeman opened fire at a child care center in Nong Bua Lampo province.

According to the Bangkok Post, Deputy National Police Chief Torsak Sokwimul said that 37 people, including 23 children aged between two and three years, had been confirmed dead, after former policeman Banya Kamrap opened fire inside the center in Na Klang district.

The official added that at least 12 people were injured in the accident, including eight seriously.

The motive behind the accident was not yet clear.

The terrorist attack began at 12:30 (06:30 GMT) in the nursery, before the assailant fled the car and crashed into some pedestrians, said Nong Bua Lampu Jakapat Police Colonel Vijiter Ithaya.

Police said Banya, 34, was dismissed from the police in mid-June, for possession of methamphetamine pills.

The former policeman managed to escape from the scene of the accident.

The Central Bureau of Investigation stated on its Facebook page that the gunman returned to his home and killed his wife and child after the attack, and then committed suicide by shooting himself.
