The idea with the self-driving bus is that people should be able to get from one place to another in a smooth way.

It should be a complement to the regular local traffic.

In the future, it can also act as a healthcare bus for the region.

- I see many advantages with this one.

The elderly can also use it to transport themselves to restaurants instead of bringing home a lunch box.

A bus like this can also have a healthcare interior so that it comes to your home to take samples, says Pia Kristiansson, project manager in Västerbotten.

In the project stage

The bus, which is powered by electricity and controlled by censors, is still in the testing stage.

Today, it is driven, among other things, in Linköping together with a control driver.

So far, it is not adapted to the climate in the north, but the hope is that it will transport people in colder weather.

Region Västerbotten has not yet purchased any buses.

Each bus costs approximately SEK 2.5 million and so far the region has not calculated how many are needed.

- It will be cheaper transport with the buses, which enables more transport and that we can spend money on care, says Pia Kristiansson.
