Catherine Nay SEASON 2022 - 202306h05, October 05, 2022

The story of Jacques Chirac and Edouard Balladur is that of two allies who gradually become rivals.

Chirac and Balladur are two spiritual brothers divided by their common ambition: to govern.

Jacques Chirac has long thought that he could rely on Edouard Balladur, without realizing the influence that his collaborator had on him and his real intentions.

Who in this political tandem was the real boss?

The second part of this episode devoted to the political duo Balladur-Chirac begins after the defeat of the right in the presidential election of 1981, when Chirac begins to understand that for Balladur, power is not shared.

It ends in 1995, when Edouard Balladur delivers the coup de grace by standing for the presidential election.

A betrayal that Jacques Chirac will never be able to forgive.

In 1981, Jacques Chirac ran for president for the first time.

He is eliminated in the first round.

However, Edouard Balladur had advised him against embarking on this adventure.

For Balladur, it is his fault if the right lost the Elysée.

But in 1983, the right regained hope.

Socialist President François Mitterrand radically changed his economic policy.

Balladur then offers Chirac a text that theorizes cohabitation.

Little by little, the relationship between the two men evolves.

The man in the shadows gains confidence and devours ambition.

In this episode of the "Inseparable" podcast produced by Europe 1 Studio, Catherine Nay recounts the interested rapprochement and then the inevitable estrangement between the "two thirty-year-old friends".
