The decision that same-sex couples should be able to marry and adopt children was taken by the country's constitutional court back in July, and on Tuesday the decision was hammered out in parliament.

- We recognize the rights of same-sex couples that they should have had a long time ago, says Simon Maljevac, responsible for equality issues in the country's government.

The law was adopted with 48 votes for, 29 against and one abstention.

A total of 18 European countries have legalized same-sex marriage.
