Down in the catacombs, the cooling and heat pump is in full swing.

Recently, it has switched to producing heat, as the temperatures outside drop.

It's running at half speed and doesn't need more right now.

It is an example of how it has been tweaked to work better.

- As this part is the heart of the entire heating system, we have seen that there was potential for improvement.

The result has exceeded expectations, says Mathias Larsson, property manager technology in Malmö.

Saved 20 percent

The work to trim the facility has been challenging but rewarding as electricity costs have dropped by 20 percent.

- Even before we saw the increase in the electricity price, we had a need to tune the plant to make it more efficient, says Mathias Larsson.

Cooling and heating pumps often do not work optimally and it is difficult to notice, says Joakim Persson, technology area manager at Vasakronan, the property company that owns the shopping centre.

- Now we have special equipment that we put on these heat pumps and can see a lot about how the heat pumps work.

This allows us to tune them so that they run optimally, he says.

There are more challenges

Challenges remain in terms of temperature regulation in the mall.

The triangle has a glass roof where cold can penetrate.

- We have four large entrances and when they open at the same time, there will be a thoroughfare in the shopping centre, so that is our next challenge, says Joakim Persson.
