The convoy was carrying about fifty people, the majority of whom were women and children.

A tractor towing a trailer full of pilgrims returning from a shrine in India overturned on Saturday and plunged into a pond, killing 26 and seriously injuring 16, authorities said.

The accident happened in the city of Kanpur, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, said a senior local official, Sudheer Kumar.

At least 400 dead a day on India's roads

Traffic accidents are common in India, killing more than 150,000 people last year, or more than 400 a day, according to official statistics, which are likely underestimated.

Transporting people in tractor trailers is also common, especially in rural areas.

The roads there are often poorly maintained and the safety conditions and the Highway Code are not respected.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences on Twitter.

“My thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones and loved ones and my prayers are with those injured,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath stressed that such vehicles - a tractor pulling a large trailer - should only be used to transport agricultural produce and cargo, not people.

"The accident in Kanpur district is truly heartbreaking," he said.
