During the night of Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Lyman in the Donetsk region has been "completely cleared" of Russian troops.

Lyman has been used as a logistics hub by Russia, making its recapture all the more important for Ukrainian forces.

Recapturing the city could now allow Ukrainian soldiers to reach more contested territory in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, says Joakim Paasikivi.

- It is an important victory, both symbolically but also tactically for further offensive.
