During the last month, the number of bankruptcies in the hotel and restaurant industry increased by 25 percent.

But the hardest hit was the retail trade.

Here, the number of bankruptcies increased by as much as 45 percent in September.

When everything becomes more expensive and consumers have to prioritize harder in their budgets, it often hits retail and consumer goods first, according to Johanna Blomé, economist at the credit and business information company UC.

- Because something you need is food on the table, but do you really need a new jacket in a different color?

Increasing in more industries

At the same time, bankruptcies increased in the majority of industries, seven out of ten, which are included in UC's bankruptcy statistics.

The credit reporting company Syna shares UC's view that many companies are currently struggling against headwinds.

It is difficult to draw conclusions based on individual monthly statistics, but bankruptcies will probably continue to increase in number during the autumn and winter, according to Karl Stjerna, CEO of Syna.

"In addition, it is the case that many companies are faced with repaying deferred taxes and employer contributions, which were the previous government's way of alleviating the consequences for companies in crisis during the pandemic," he says in a press release.

Increased number of bankruptcies to be expected

Most indications are that we are headed for a recession next year.

According to UC, it is also most likely that bankruptcies will continue to increase during the autumn and winter.

In addition, we may see quite large regional differences as a result of electricity prices, which vary greatly depending on which part of the country you live in.

- Then it will matter in which electricity area in Sweden your business is located, says Johanna Blomé.
