DRC: Monusco condemns the attack on its base in Minembwe, in the East

Monusco condemns the attack on one of its bases in the DRC: that of Minembwe, in the east of the country, in the province of South Kivu.

According to the UN peacekeeping mission, the attack was carried out on Friday evening (09/30) by suspected members of the Twirwaneho armed group.

A peacekeeper was killed.

On September 30 at 10:30 p.m., the Monusco operational base in Minembwe

was attacked by alleged members of the armed group Twirwaneho 

", explains Ndeye Khady Lo, the acting spokesperson for Monusco.

 The armed men approached the base after contacting Monusco for a probable surrender and during this attack, we unfortunately lost one of our peacekeepers

Monusco condemns this attack and recalls that “ 

the disarmament activities carried out by the mission are mandated by the United Nations Security Council, conducted impartially on a voluntary basis.

 The acting spokesperson for the UN Mission in the DRC also stresses that " 

attacks against blue helmets can constitute a war crime

 " and calls on the Congolese authorities to " 

deploy all possible efforts so that the perpetrators of this heinous attack answer for their actions

 ".

Ndeye Khady Lo assures that Monusco remains committed to " 

supporting the Congolese government and people in their efforts to establish peace and stability in the east of the country, as stipulated in our mandate to protect civilians 

".
