Nicaragua announces on October 1 the severance of its diplomatic relations with the Netherlands.

Managua describes the country as interventionist and “ 

neocolonial

 ”.

The Dutch ambassador announced on September 29 that her country was giving up funding for the construction of a hospital promised years ago, a project that has been stalled since the violent crackdown on anti-government protests in 2018. Since then, this crackdown has continued. has increased and Nicaragua, under international sanctions, has become even more isolated on the international scene, with various announcements in recent days.

Nicaragua has multiplied the acts of force against the Western countries which it accuses of interference.

It was first the Vatican which paid the price, seven months ago, with the expulsion of the apostolic nuncio, a world first;

” again on Wednesday by Daniel Ortega;

a president in power for 15 years and re-elected last year in an unopposed ballot.

His wife, Vice-President Rosario Murillo, also recalled Friday that the new American ambassador, just confirmed,

would not set foot on the territory.

The diplomat called Nicaragua a " 

dictatorship

 " during his hearing before the US Senate.

Any sanctioned conviction

Earlier this week, it was the European Union ambassador, who arrived barely a year ago, who was declared

persona non grata

.

Earlier this week, Brussels called for the return of democracy to Nicaragua and the release of political prisoners.

The Ortega couple therefore apply themselves to sanctioning any condemnation of their regime abroad.

In Nicaragua, it has already silenced all critical voices since 2018: opponents in prison or in exile, several hundred closed NGOs, media censorship... The antenna of CNN in Spanish was cut this week, after 25 years of presence in the country.
