Hurricane Ian, weakened and now declassified as a post-tropical cyclone, continues its run in North Carolina (where Joe Biden approved the state of emergency) and in Virginia, after causing the worst devastation in Florida (64 deaths and dozens of billions in damages) and in South Carolina.

Overall, 1.7 million people are still without electricity in these 4 states.

The weather bureau predicts Ian will still create dangerous conditions in the Central Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic area.

The large US networks continue to broadcast images of the catastrophe, while President Joe Biden warned that "it will take months, years to rebuild in Florida what the hurricane destroyed".

Rescuers continue to search for survivors in the ruins of flooded Florida homes as South Carolina authorities have begun to assess the damage.

The powerful cyclone terrified millions of people for much of the week, hitting western Cuba before crossing into Florida and then touching land in South Carolina. Ian is expected to weaken tomorrow, before he is expected to arrive in Virginia.
