The price of gasoline continues to climb in Côte d'Ivoire.

The price of the “Super” is now set at 775 francs, up 5.5% compared to last month, and 26.15% since the start of the year when the liter traded at 615 francs.

And for the first time since 2019, diesel, the best-selling fuel in the country, is up 6.5%.

The price per liter is now 655 francs instead of 615 francs.

An increase that does not satisfy motorists and transport professionals.

With our correspondent in Abidjan,

François Hume-Ferkatadji

In this service station in Cocody, most customers are stunned to discover the new price increase, plus 40 francs for super and diesel.

Amidou Koné, a taxi driver for 15 years, sighs, he will have to pass on this increase to his customers.

“

Before refueling cost us less, now it has become a torture.

And if the customer pays a thousand francs, we will tell him to pay 1,500: he will complain

”.

And although fuel is heavily subsidized in Côte d'Ivoire - up to 75% for diesel, and 39% for super - motorists are railing against this new increase, notes Dieby, a gas station attendant.

Since this morning, they've only been complaining, because 40 francs is too much, at least if it's 5 francs, 10 francs, we can understand, but 40 francs, he's going to complain.

»

Regarding the super, this is the 4th price increase since the beginning.

Some are now considering swapping their car for a two-wheeler.

There are people who plan to park their vehicle to buy a motorcycle, to go shopping.

»

And others to invest in an alternative technology.

“

If we have the possibility of bringing in electric vehicles, that will make us happy… Because with that, where are we going?

It continues to increase, it is not possible.

 »

The rise in fuel prices acting directly on the general increase in prices, the inflation rate is likely to remain high in the coming months in a context of discontent against the high cost of living.
