After six years of declines, the number of births is on the rise again in France with a striking fact: conceptions accelerated after each confinement linked to Covid-19.

If the oldest women have pulled the birth rate up, the number of births to mothers under 30 is down sharply, said Thursday, September 29 the French Institute of Statistics (Insee).

In 2021, 742,100 babies were born in France, 0.9% more than the previous year.

“

This rise puts an end to the six years of decline in the number of births observed between 2015 and 2020

”, specifies the National Institute of Statistics.

However, this year 2021 had started with a very marked decline in births until mid-February:

due to the first confinement

, in the spring of 2020.

The “

context of health crisis

[linked to Covid]

and strong economic uncertainty

” could then encourage couples to “

postpone their parenthood projects

 ”, explains INSEE, which

has not observed the same phenomenon

of a drop in births. nine months after the second confinement of November 2020.

The two confinements were in any case followed by an acceleration in the number of conceptions.

Result: births jumped in the spring of 2021, as well as from the summer when, until the end of the year, the number of births was each month "

much higher

" than the same periods of 2020.

Finally, mothers in France are increasingly older: over the whole of 2021, women aged 30-34 had more babies and for women over 40 the increase is even higher. .

On the other hand, the number of births to mothers under 30 is down.

Difficult at this stage to know

" if a sharp rise in births will occur this year in the fall, like last year, comments INSEE.
