With the fires extinguished in Gironde, it is now time to take stock after this catastrophic season for French forests.

How to replant?

How to rebuild burnt-out houses?

On these questions, the prefect of the Gironde as well as the firefighters, provided some answers.

What to learn from the lessons of this summer?

With global warming, the effects of which are increasingly felt on ecosystems, it is essential to rethink the management of natural environments and in the case of the Gironde, the presence of campsites near the Dune du Pilat.

According to the firefighters, there is no question, for example, of calling into question the promise of the President of the Republic.

The five campsites of the Dune du Pilat will be well rebuilt and will be able to reopen next summer.

But be careful, insists the prefect of Gironde, Fabienne Buccio, within the framework of strict obligations.

More discreet campsites to limit the risks?

"Why not temporary constructions, in tents. We have nothing against", proposes the prefect.

"The whole thing is that, project by project, we will tell them: 'that's possible, that's not possible'".

Fabienne Buccio first wishes to consolidate the current standards, before creating other restrictions.

"You know, we have a progression: every year, they had to remove so many bungalows. We had a subject with a campsite that did not do so. They will have to give a number of pitches which will be the number planned. won't be able to go beyond that," she adds.

More suitable equipment for firefighters

For their part, the firefighters of the Gironde led by Marc Vermeulen, reflect on the evolution of their equipment.

"One of the particularities of this summer is that the fires arrived much more quickly in the peaks. So we are going to review the specifications of our trucks", he explains.

According to the firefighters, vehicles with a greater water propulsion capacity, both in height and in power, are needed.

“We saw that we used the means of the air base. These means are normally used for the fight against aircraft fires. And we saw all their effectiveness when we had fires which arrived very quickly in peaks with a violence that was unheard of", he describes.

Non-standard fires creating non-standard bills.

These already amount, according to current estimates, to 11 million euros for the Gironde Departmental Fire and Rescue Service.
