07:24: Apple removes Russian social network VKontakte from its app store

Apple confirmed on Wednesday that it has removed applications from Russian social network VKontakte from its App Store, following new British sanctions imposed on Russian organizations and personalities in retaliation for annexation votes organized in four regions of Ukraine by Moscow.

Users of VKontakte (VK), a Russian platform similar to Facebook, will be able to continue using their apps if they already have them on their iPhone, but not download new ones or perform updates.

“There may be difficulties with notifications and payments.

VK specialists are working on it,” the network said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that it had recently upgraded apps to work well without updates “for a long time.”

Apple explained that the publishers of VKontakte's mobile services were controlled by entities sanctioned by London.

The Californian group has therefore blocked the accounts of these developers and their applications can no longer be downloaded, regardless of the country.

07:18: Pro-Russian leaders call for annexation

The pro-Russian leaders of Ukrainian regions totally or partially occupied by Moscow called for annexation to Russia on Wednesday, the day after referendums described as “illegal” by kyiv and its Western allies, who promised sanctions.

“Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich (Putin) (…) I ask you to consider the question of the accession of the Lugansk People's Republic to Russia as a subject of the Russian Federation,” said Leonid Passechnik, separatist leader of Lugansk region in eastern Ukraine.

He has indicated his intention to go to Moscow, like his counterpart from the neighboring region of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, to formalize the annexation to Russia.

Two similar letters were sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin by the two heads of the occupation administrations of Kherson and Zaporozhye (southern Ukraine), Vladimir Saldo and Yevgeny Balitsky.

The first invokes the right of self-determination of peoples.

These requests come the day after referendums on the subject organized by Russia urgently, over five days, in these four regions which it totally or partially controls in Ukraine.
