During a press conference, the country's ministers are now informing about the new restrictions for Russian tourists in the country.

No Russian tourists may travel into the country or onward to other Schengen countries through the country.

The explosions at the gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea and the so-called "referendums" in Ukraine have accelerated the government's decision, Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said at the press conference.

The decision now comes into effect as early as Friday night.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs: Introduce humanitarian visas

It is not a total stop and exceptions will be made for those traveling from Russia to see their family, work or receive medical care.

Humanitarian reasons or seeking asylum should not be allowed to prevent solo travelers, the government states.

The possibility of introducing "humanitarian visas" is now being reviewed, but it will take a few months for these to be in place according to Haavisto.

However, previous visas previously granted to Russian citizens may be completely invalidated.
