The Sandinista regime in Nicaragua has asked the Ambassador of the European Union, Bettina Muscheidt, to leave the country.

As the government-critical newspaper "La Prensa" reported, Foreign Minister Denis Moncada gave the German diplomat appropriate instructions after a meeting on Wednesday.

Muscheidt attended the interview accompanied by the French and German ambassadors.

The EU had recently repeatedly sharply criticized the violations of human rights in Nicaragua and called for the release of political prisoners.

According to the "Confidencial" portal, almost 2,000 non-governmental organizations, church and civil society institutions have been deprived of the legal basis for continuing their work in the Central American country since 2018.

Nicaragua has been experiencing a crisis since 2018 with nationwide protests against the left-wing government of President Daniel Ortega.

Since then, around 350 people have been killed and thousands injured.

Nicaragua's church, non-governmental organizations and independent media have repeatedly and harshly criticized the human rights violations committed by the leadership in Managua.

Ahead of the elections in early November 2021, several presidential candidates were arrested, all believed to be rivals of incumbent President Daniel Ortega and his wife and Vice President Rosario Murillo.

Ortega officially won the election, but numerous countries do not recognize the victory.
