The Indian authorities on Wednesday declared the People's Front of India (PFI) and its affiliate organizations an "illegal group" with immediate effect and banned them for five years.

This comes after the authorities arrested dozens of members of the Islamic organization on Tuesday and earlier this month, accusing them of involvement in violence and anti-state activities.

The Front denies the accusations. It also condemned the arrests and the required raids, and resorted to organizing street protests.

A government notice on Wednesday alleged that MILF officials were collecting money in India and abroad as part of what it called a "criminal plot" and then funneling it through multiple accounts to make it look legitimate.

He added that these funds are then used to carry out "various criminal, illegal and terrorist activities in the country."

On Tuesday, Indian police across the country arrested more than 200 members of the MILF, accusing them of planning sectarian violence and subversive activities, according to police and media.

More than 80 people were arrested in the southern state of Karnataka on Tuesday, and police in Uttar Pradesh - the most populous state - arrested 57 people linked to the LTTE for their alleged "violence and increasing involvement in anti-state activities across the country". Human rights organizations also reported the arrest of about 100 other people across the country.

Indian authorities have long said that the group that targeted them on Tuesday had close ties to the Islamic Student Movement in India, a jihadist group banned since 2001.

Human rights NGOs and foreign governments accuse Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu Nationalist Party of discriminating against India's Muslim minority (200 million people) since it took power in 2014.

Radical Hindu groups supported by the Modi government are carrying out various campaigns and activities targeting the Muslim minority, including attacks on Muslim mosques, burning their homes, and a boycott of their goods, and in many cases it has even resulted in the execution of killings against members of the Muslim community.
