The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has approved a request to establish a Korean delegation.

The North Atlantic Council, NATO's highest decision-making body, said on its website on the 27th local time, "We have decided to accept the request of the Korean government to designate the Korean Embassy in Belgium as the NATO representative."

"This is an important step towards strengthening cooperation with South Korea," he said.

“With South Korea, political dialogue and practical cooperation are taking place in areas covering non-proliferation, cyber defense, counter-terrorism and disaster relief,” he added. “Korea is an active partner of NATO.”

Yoon Soon-koo, Ambassador to Belgium and the EU, will concurrently serve as NATO's resident representative.

The government announced plans to establish a NATO representative office in June following President Yoon Seok-yeol's attendance at the NATO summit.

The NATO partner countries in the Asia Pacific region are Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Three countries have already opened NATO representatives, and the ambassador to Belgium is also serving as the NATO representative.
