Four Palestinians were shot dead by the Israeli army during a military operation to arrest "activists" in Jenin camp in the West Bank, yesterday morning, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

This is the latest military operation in the area, which has been the scene of almost daily confrontations between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in recent months.

The Ministry of Health confirmed in a statement that "Abdul Fathi Hazem, Muhammad Mahmoud Elouna Brahma, Ahmed Nazmi Alawneh, and Muhammad Abu Naasa, are the martyrs of the Israeli aggression" in Jenin.

According to the ministry, 44 injuries were recorded, including "serious and very serious" injuries.

For its part, the army announced that its soldiers shot dead "two suspects involved in a number of recent shooting attacks."

"While the house where the two suspects are located, an explosive device was detonated, the two suspects opened fire in the direction of the security forces," he said in a statement.

The statement added, "The forces responded with fire according to the unified response procedures, and both were killed," noting that one of them was Hazem.

Large numbers of soldiers participated in the operation, which was initiated by the Israeli army.

The army mainly targeted the home of the family of Abed Hazem, brother of Raad Hazem, who is accused of carrying out a shooting attack in the Dizengoff neighborhood of Tel Aviv that killed three Israelis last April.

Raad was shot dead by the Israeli police, after a short chase.

Since then, the Israeli forces have been pursuing his brother Abed, and their father, Fathi.

At the Sheikh Zaid bin Salman Mosque in Jenin refugee camp, hundreds of people prayed over the body of Abd Hazem, who was wrapped in the Palestinian flag, and his head was wrapped in a Palestinian keffiyeh.

The young men kissed him on the forehead.

A large crowd was buried in Jenin, the bodies of the four young men.

Jenin camp is considered a stronghold of armed Palestinian factions.

Israel is organizing its fifth legislative elections in three and a half years on the first of November.

The European Union said in a tweet on Twitter that it was "concerned by the escalation of violence in Jenin in the wake of the Israeli incursions."

Analysts warn that the escalating violence in the occupied West Bank, both internally and with Israel, may lead to a third Palestinian intifada.

For its part, the Palestinian presidency considered that "the Israeli escalation will not give security or stability to Israel."

The Israeli army confirmed, through its Twitter account, that its forces continued to operate in Jenin.
