“It is sometimes difficult to appreciate how the Chinese government and people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, can succeed so quickly in so many fields of work,” said Marion, the granddaughter of Mr. James G. Endicott, a well-known international friend. Endicott said in an interview with a reporter from China News Agency in Toronto, Canada recently.

In Wen Meilan's view, the Chinese Communist Party has led this country with a huge population but was once impoverished and weak to comprehensively and efficiently solve many problems such as education, health and social welfare, which is enough to amaze the world.

"Of course, the task is still ongoing," she said. Among the many issues, poverty alleviation and environmental governance are the long-term focus of the CCP.

She noted that the 18th and 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China both regarded poverty eradication as the top priority of their work.

In 2021, China will declare a comprehensive victory in poverty alleviation, completing the arduous task of eliminating absolute poverty.

Wen Meilan said that the number of rural poor people in China who have been lifted out of poverty is nearly three times that of Canada's total population.

Countless volunteers have devoted themselves to poverty alleviation work and have made amazing efforts.

What impresses her deeply are the concepts of "poverty alleviation must first be aware of poverty" and "one must not be missed on the road to poverty alleviation".

She also looks forward to seeing that China can continue to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor and promote the building of a more harmonious society.

When it comes to environmental protection, Wen Meilan said that China has written "ecological civilization" into its constitution, which is a rare practice in the world.

She said frankly that China's total carbon emissions have received attention from the outside world.

But in fact, over the past decade, China has been "absolutely the world leader" in developing green technologies, and can be a global model, both at the national level and in encouraging local initiatives.

She sees that China is providing key concepts, products and systems for addressing climate change.

China now has the world's largest installed hydro, solar and wind capacity, and is reducing its own coal use as a result.

At the same time, China also pays attention to environmental issues in its poverty alleviation process, such as installing solar energy systems when building new housing for low-income people.

The second phase of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) will be held in Montreal, Canada in December this year.

Wen Meilan believes that both Canada and China have a culture of love and respect for nature, and both have a magnificent natural geographical environment.

The two countries have generally enjoyed good relations in the past.

She hoped that this meeting could promote the remodeling of friendly relations and expand exchanges and cooperation between Canada and China.

Wen Meilan said that all countries are facing poverty reduction and also need to deal with the climate crisis. "We need international cooperation, mutual learning and mutual assistance." She quoted Chinese President Xi Jinping as saying: "All countries in the world are riding on a big ship with a shared destiny. In order to cross the stormy seas and sail to a bright future, we must help each other, and it is unacceptable to try to throw anyone into the sea." She said that this also applies to the maintenance of peaceful coexistence and the international system with the United Nations at its core.

Regarding the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China to be held in Beijing, Wen Meilan said that this is a good time to review the achievements of the Chinese Communist Party and look forward to the future.

She looked forward to the success of the conference.

Wen Youzhang was born in Sichuan in 1898.

He had in-depth exchanges with the Kuomintang and the Communist Party and supported the path of the Communist Party of China. He introduced the New China to the outside world for a long time and devoted himself to the cause of peace. In 1965, he was awarded the title of "People's Friendship Messenger" by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

After his death in 1993, some of his ashes were scattered into the Dadu River.

Wen Zhongzhi, son of Wen Youzhang and father of Wen Meilan, was born in Shanghai in 1928. As a Canadian sinologist, he is also committed to objectively introducing China's development to the world.

He died in Toronto in 2019.
