Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202306:00 a.m., September 27, 2022

SPECIAL SERIES - Listen to the rest of the Titanic story told by historian Virginie Girod, in an unpublished series in 4 parts.

Three days after departing from Southampton in England, a first-class passenger overhears a strange conversation between the ocean liner's captain John Smith and the chairman of White Star Line, Lord Bruce Ismay.

It's about a speed record that should be beaten and engines that should be pushed to the limit.

But the next day, April 14, 1912, several ships that were also in the North Atlantic began to report the presence of icebergs by radio… Is speeding up in this area, in an attempt to reach New York more quickly, really reasonable?

On Sunday, April 14, 1912, the Titanic continued its maiden cruise, heading for New York, in the North Atlantic.

For the White Star line, breaking a speed record would be an additional victory.

But at the same time, by radio, several ships in this area report the presence of icebergs.

Captain John Smith is slow to relay the information to the officers and then he chooses to change his route, to try to avoid the danger.

But around 11:30 p.m., a black mass emerges in the night.

The alert is given immediately.

The huge liner barely slows down and turns very slowly to port, says historian Virginie Girod.

Too slowly… This story is a Europe 1 Studio production.

Topics covered: Titanic - boat - shipwreck - Great Britain - White Star line - Bruce Ismay - John Smith
