Earlier, the FSB reported that it had detained the Japanese consul in Vladivostok, Motoki Tatsunori, while he was carrying out a spy operation.

The Japanese diplomat was declared persona non grata.

“A strong protest was expressed to the Japanese side in connection with the actions of an employee of the Consulate General and a note of the corresponding content was handed over,” the statement said, published on the website of the ministry.

Tatsunori later pleaded guilty to spying against Russia.
