On Monday, a unanimous Riksdag elected the current speaker, Andreas Norlén, as the new speaker.

The decision was made by acclamation, where the members of the Riksdag together shouted yes out in the chamber.

The decision was met with great applause in the Riksdag.

- Not least I want to thank the parties that acted differently than they usually do in presidential elections, he says during a press conference after the election.

Several parties, across the spectrum, have reacted very positively to the announcement and praised Norlén's "commitment, expertise and integrity".

- We welcome that Andreas Norlén has been nominated as chairman, says Magdalena Andersson (S).

- You don't fix what works, and especially not what works very well, says SD group leader Henrik Vinge.

Follows up Kristersson's probing mission

Shortly after the vote, Norlén called a press conference where he announced that he intends to meet Ulf Kristersson on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. to agree on the probe assignment the party leader received last week.

- I will listen to what he has to report and then I will take a position going forward, he says to SVT's political reporter Karolina Skoglund.

He also states that he believes that the negotiations will go faster than in 2018, but that it is difficult to predict exactly how long it will take.

- This is not a competition.

It is about how Sweden should be governed, then I think that the mathematics of days here and there may not be the central thing.

The central thing is that we get a government that can govern Sweden, he says.

On September 27, the king will visit to declare the Riksdag open, and the following day the speaker could present a proposal for a new prime minister.

Fight over the election of the second vice-president

The election for second vice president, however, did not go as smoothly.

In the closed vote, neither the Green Party's Janine Alm Ericson nor the Sweden Democrats' Julia Kronlind won.

Of the 438 votes present, Kronlind received 173 votes and Alm Ericson 49.

A total of 348 votes were registered, which means that one person was missing during the voting.

Looking at the distribution of seats in the Riksdag, where the right-wing parties received 176 seats, it can therefore be assumed that at least three people did not vote according to the party line.

At 15.10 on Monday, the Riksdag voted again - and Julia Kronlind was elected second deputy speaker.

347 members voted and in total Julia Kronlid received 174 votes.
