US official: Washington warned Russia against using nuclear weapons

US National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan said on Sunday that the administration of US President Joe Biden had secretly told the Kremlin that any use of nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine would have catastrophic consequences for Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin renewed his warnings last week of a nuclear threat and mobilized hundreds of thousands of reservists, after Ukrainian forces recaptured swathes of Russian-held territory.

According to Bloomberg News, Sullivan said in an interview with "Face the Nation" on CBS that these nuclear threats are an issue that must be taken seriously.

"We are in contact with the Kremlin directly and privately at all levels and have emphasized that any use of nuclear weapons would have catastrophic consequences for Russia, and that the United States and its allies would respond decisively, and we were clear and specific about what that would entail," Sullivan added.
