The Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at the General Command of Ajman Police, Lt. Col. Saif Abdullah Al Falasi, stated that the main causes of run-over accidents are the lack of commitment by pedestrians to the places designated for pedestrian crossing, stressing that random crossing causes an increase in run-over accidents, especially since the surprise factor loses the driver of the vehicle rapid control of his vehicle. .

Al Falasi told "Emirates Today" that most of the emirate's roads were provided with bridges and pedestrian crossing lines, and roadblocks were placed on the highways to prevent random crossing, pointing out that pedestrians may not cross on high-speed streets unless there is a place designated for crossing.

He added that the Traffic Department, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Municipality and Planning Department, is working to allocate places for pedestrians to cross, whether they are bridges, land lines or regulatory signals for pedestrian crossing, which has led to a reduction in injuries resulting from run-over accidents.

Al Falasi explained that the administration has taken a number of special measures to reduce run-over incidents to preserve the lives of pedestrians, including identifying places designated for pedestrians such as bridges, traffic lights and pedestrian lines, and setting up barriers that prevent random crossings on roads with speeds exceeding 80 kilometers per hour.

He pointed out that the table of violations issued by Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017, criminalizing pedestrians crossing in places other than those designated, includes two paragraphs;

The first of them is non-compliance with the traffic lights and a fine of 400 dirhams, and in its second paragraph, pedestrians cross the road outside of the places designated for crossing, and a fine of 400 dirhams.

Al Falasi explained that cyclists and pedestrians who do not adhere to the traffic rules are the most responsible for the increase in run-over accidents on the roads, and hence the increase in injuries, stressing the need to adhere to the rules of traffic and crossing on the road.

He pointed out that one of the causes of bicycle accidents is not adhering to the designated lanes, and traveling in the opposite direction, which makes cyclists vulnerable to collision with cars.

Al Falasi added that the department has organized many pedestrian awareness campaigns, including programmes, instructions and lectures to raise traffic awareness among pedestrians and road users, with the aim of enhancing pedestrian safety.

Al Falasi pointed out that the driver's commitment to the traffic instructions and adherence to the specified speeds will avoid traffic violations, calling on drivers to abide by and not to commit violations and to follow the traffic instructions and traffic patrols.
