Parents said that their students have been infected with lice, which negatively affects their public health, calling on school administrations to conduct periodic inspections of classrooms to discover the infected, and prevent them from attending until their safety is ensured, while schools confirmed that they are taking preventive and curative measures to get rid of this infestation.

Preventive measures

The nurse in a government school in Fujairah, Nasreen Muhammad, advised to take preventive measures to protect against infestation of lice, such as maintaining constant cleanliness of mattresses and blankets, floor coverings and mats, and things belonging to the infected person, especially towels, hats and combs that he uses.

She also pointed out the importance of storing the items and clothes of the infected children in bags for a whole day, to ensure the death of the insect during that period.

A nurse at a school in Fujairah confirmed that school nurses are making efforts to eliminate and prevent lice by means of medical preparations that they distribute to students, as well as organizing awareness lectures for female students and their mothers, but personal hygiene remains the most important method of treatment and prevention.

The mother of a primary school student in Fujairah, who preferred not to publish her name, confirmed that she is keen on her daughter's cleanliness on a daily basis, and on holidays she does not suffer anything, except that when she returns to school she finds lice in her head, which prompted her to communicate with the school administration to solve the problem that She began to worry, because the lice had passed from her daughter to her young children.

According to the mother, the school administration responded, and a seminar was devoted to mothers, in which the school nurse explained ways to get rid of lice and eliminate them, and also touched upon the damages caused by not paying attention to the personal hygiene of children.

The father of one of the students resorted to shaving his son’s hair completely, after repeatedly infecting his scalp with lice, explaining that this solution came after unsuccessful attempts to eliminate lice, in which he used several types of medicines and “shampoo.”

He expressed his fears about the effects of these insects among students, as they may infect the student with anemia or other diseases, in addition to the fact that the injured student becomes rejected by his colleagues, which negatively affects his psychological state, and consequently his level of educational attainment decreases.

He called for the necessity of intensifying school lectures in this aspect, and in the event that a student was infected, his family must be informed as soon as possible, so that they can give him the appropriate treatments immediately, before he causes the infection to be transmitted to his colleagues.

(Um Muhammad), a mother of two girls, attributed the spread of lice infection among the students to the lack of personal hygiene among some of them, adding: “School administrations are required to conduct continuous inspection, and to raise awareness among students of the need not to exchange personal tools, such as combs and other tools that help to Transmission of infection.

And the lice infection did not stop with students, according to the Arabic language teacher in one of the schools of the first cycle in Fujairah, Amal Rashid, who said that she was infected with lice as a result of its spread among the female students in the classroom, which caused her anxiety, especially since she has a baby and is afraid that the infection will be transmitted to him, what He made her use insect-preventive drugs for a long time.

She believed that parents are concerned with taking care of their children's personal hygiene, and the nurse's role in the school is to educate them on how to take care of that, in addition to her role in treating students who suffer from lice, through special treatments such as shampoo and sprays designated for that.

“The main role that the nurse plays in every school regarding lice, is to inspect the students’ hair and distribute the shampoo intended for the prevention and treatment of lice. Nisreen Muhammad, who works in a government school in Fujairah, pointed out that "sometimes a female student complains that her female colleagues are infested with lice. intact.”

Among the symptoms of lice infestation, according to Muhammad, is itching that results in wounds on the scalp, and the appearance of small red pills on it, and on the neck and shoulders, due to the skin sensitivity to lice that feed on human blood, and are usually found behind the ear, and in the back of the head at the neck, and there are eggs Lice on the hair, which is very similar to dandruff, but the difference is that it is difficult to remove, and lice cause eczema, severe itching and infections, explaining that there are no studies that prove that lice cause organic diseases for children, but the secretions of their saliva may cause infections and severe allergies in the scalp. .
