On September 22, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi answered questions on the spot after delivering a keynote speech at the Asia Society headquarters in New York.

In response to the question on how to view the status quo of the Taiwan issue, Wang Yi said that the Taiwan issue is the biggest and most fundamental issue affecting future Sino-US relations.

The US side has repeatedly stated that it does not want any party to change the status quo of Taiwan.

Wang Yi stressed that the fundamental status quo of the Taiwan issue is that, first of all, as a part of China, Taiwan has never been a country, neither in history nor at present, nor will it be a country in the future.

Second, although the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have not yet achieved complete reunification, China's sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been divided, nor can they be divided.

China has only one.

This is clearly reflected in the legal documents on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Third, Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly in 1971 completely resolved the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the UN, and expelled the so-called representative of Taiwan from the UN, which not only confirmed that Taiwan is a part of China, but also completely blocked it. Any space to create "two Chinas" and "one China, one Taiwan".

Wang Yi said that China's policy on handling the Taiwan issue is very clear, that is, to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest possible effort and sincerity, and this policy maintains continuity and stability.

To achieve peaceful reunification, we must resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence".

In other words, the more rampant the "Taiwan independence" forces are, the less likely the peaceful resolution of the Taiwan issue will be.

"Taiwan independence" split and peaceful resolution are incompatible.

If the Anti-Secession Law is ultimately violated, we must take all necessary measures in accordance with the law.

Therefore, if the United States also hopes that the Taiwan issue can be resolved peacefully, it must take a clear attitude to stop all acts of "Taiwan independence", otherwise it will only be counterproductive, and the responsibility will not be on the Chinese side.

The reasoning is very clear.
