When a Folkets hus was completed in Kiruna in 1986, a settlement with the then social democratic government led to the conclusion that the association would be tenants and not property owners.

Since then, the association has shown cinemas and rented premises for conferences.

But an era will soon be over, even if the lease with LKAB looks like it could be extended until the end of June 2023.

It would also improve the situation for the cinema audience in Kiruna, since they have not started with that activity in the new cultural center Aurora.

Folket hus-förening has submitted a quote to show a cinema in Aurora, but may compete on the same terms as other possible interested parties.

"They get a little tight"

However, the municipal company will take care of conferences.

- It had a resource up there that they built their business around and they don't get the same conditions down here.

They get a little bit of a squeeze, says municipal councilor Gunnar Selberg (C).

The arrangement was already clear during the last mandate period, and according to Gunnar Selberg, there has been no significant political disagreement on that issue.

Incumbent municipal councilor Mats Taaveniku (S) cannot say much about the future of Folkets hus at this point.

- We have to look at what agreements they have with LKAB and Kiruna municipality and to what extent they have been fulfilled.
