Aid workers are in a race against time to try and save as many as possible of the few stranded whales that are still alive.

- We are aware that some of them (that were taken out to sea) may reappear on the beach, so we will monitor that, says Brendan Clarke from the Tasmanian Wildlife Service, to the ABC.

The pilot whales were found near Macquarie Harbor on the Australian state's west coast, on the day two years after the largest mass stranding in Tasmania's history.

On September 21, 2020, 470 pilot whales became stranded along the state's west coast.

Over 350 animals died that time, despite a large number of volunteers toiling in the cold water for several days to save them.
