230 whales have been found beached on Tasmania's east coast near Macquarie Harbor.

To break the news the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment of the State of Tasmania which added that "it seems that about half of the animals are alive".

Aerial images show dozens of mammals scattered along a stretch of beach.

Almost two years ago, nearly 500 pilot whales were found in the same area.

Just over 100 survived. The causes of the mass stranding are not yet fully known.

Scientists have suggested that it could be caused by herds losing their way after feeding too close to the coast.
