Guo Kaiwen, the former director of the Earthquake Prediction Center of the Taiwan Meteorological Department, said that an earthquake of this magnitude is equivalent to the power of eight atomic bombs.

Four people were trapped in the collapse of a supermarket on Zhongshan Road, Yuli Town, Hualien. Three people have been rescued, and one is still under search and rescue.
