As the train shakes from side to side, people evacuating to the platform lower their posture and wait for the vibration to stop.



Some train stations were badly damaged, and trains were derailed and rail service was suspended.



At around 2:40 PM local time, a strong earthquake struck south of Hualien City in eastern Taiwan.



The U.S. Geological Survey said the scale was 6.9, but Taiwanese authorities said it was 6.8.



After a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in southeastern Taiwan last night, more than 70 aftershocks followed, with a stronger earthquake this afternoon.



Several major roads and bridges have split and collapsed, and rescue operations are ongoing as three vehicles on the bridge have crashed.

There are reports of multiple injuries and deaths due to the earthquake, but the exact amount of casualties is not yet counted.



The earthquake was strong enough to be felt in southern China, but a tsunami warning was issued for parts of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.



Taiwan's disaster authorities are still on their toes, saying more aftershocks could continue over the next few days.
