"Stay upstairs and don't go out", is the authority's appeal to the residents of Senigallia.

The Italian holiday idyll has been hit hard by the floods that shook the entire region.

After search efforts during the night to Saturday, the death toll has risen to eleven people and around fifty people have been injured, writes La Repubblica.

Jennifer Wegerup, SVT's Italy correspondent, is on the spot in the small village of Pianello di Ostra, where five people died when the storm hit earlier this week.

- Here it has started to rain and storm again.

The people here are not only angry and sad, but also worried that it will get worse again, she says.

Described as a tidal wave

Luca lives in the village and was hit hard by what was described as a tidal wave.

- The water poured into the house and we got upstairs.

It was difficult because the water reached up to his neck, he says

Laura stands dejectedly outside her flooded house.

- Nothing could be saved.

Everything is flooded indoors and everything is destroyed.

It is a real disaster, she says.

In just one afternoon, as much rain was measured as usually falls in six months in the region.

According to Italian media, hundreds of houses are under water and several people are missing, including two children.

Mayor Riccardo Pasqualini has now announced that all commercial activities must be closed and allow people to take shelter on the upper floors, reports La Repubblica.

The government promises support

During Friday evening, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi visited the affected areas and he promises emergency aid of five million euros.

- It is a disaster.

The government will do everything in our power to help families and businesses in this area, he said during the visit.
