On Friday, at least 400 civilians and soldiers were found buried in a mass grave in a wooded area on the outskirts of the city of Izium.

Several bodies bear traces of torture.

Some have their hands tied behind their backs and one man has a noose around his neck, according to Oleh Synehubov, governor of Kharkiv.

- It smells terrible when they pick up body after body here in the forest, says SVT's reporter Elin Jönsson, who is in Ukraine together with photographer Lars Lyrefelt.

In a grave that is slightly separated from the others, 20 soldiers were found.

All with their hands tied behind their backs and shot in the head.

They are believed to have been prisoners of war.

- It is almost difficult to find the words to describe this, says Elin Jönsson.

- When you see these bodies and know what they have been through, there are very difficult feelings, she continues.

Izium, located in the eastern part of Ukraine, was one of the first cities to fall into Russian hands when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

The city was recaptured in the Ukrainian counter-offensive between 6 and 11 September.
