A refusal to comply turned into a tragedy.

During the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, a police patrol spotted a car driving with the lights off in Alfortville (Val-de-Marne).

Then the driver runs a red light.

Once they reached him, the officials asked him to stop to carry out an identity check, reports

But the man refuses, accelerates and flees in the direction of Ivry-sur-Seine.

He runs several red lights as he passes.

When the police think they have lost sight of him, they discover a wrecked vehicle in the middle of the road.

They find the driver lying on the road a few meters further.

Ejected from his vehicle, the man had his foot severed.

The police immediately alerted the emergency services and one of them put a tourniquet on him.

He was then rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery.

Officers caught up with his passenger who had fled at a run.

He was taken into custody.
