The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (Kan) reported that the Israeli General Security Service (Shin Bet) recommended that the security and military leaders in Israel impose a military siege on the cities from which armed military operations are launched in the West Bank.

Shin Bet officials expressed their fear of an unprecedented chaos among the perpetrators of armed attacks who are not affiliated with the Palestinian organizations.

Israeli media reported that the Shin Bet report recommends the adoption of two regimes of siege: one of them is “complete and absolute, imposing on cities and villages that export militants to carry out intensive operations,” and a less severe siege in areas and cities that enjoy relative calm, in order to relieve the population and control what it described of prohibited activities.

The Israeli radio said that the Shin Bet recommends imposing a strict siege specifically in the Jenin and Nablus areas, before losing control completely over the cities in the northern West Bank.

It also reported that the Israeli General Security recommended the withdrawal of work permits and entry to Israeli areas for residents of the village of Kafrdan, the birthplace of the two martyrs who killed an Israeli officer last night at the Jalameh checkpoint north of Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

She added that such measures reduce tension and create internal pressure that reduces the motives of the relatives of the perpetrators of the operations to follow in their footsteps.

The Israeli army had warned that the area was on the verge of a security deterioration and a dangerous escalation, in light of the recurring armed operations based in the West Bank.

For his part, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz confirmed that the army will continue its activity in the West Bank and anywhere else whenever necessary.

secret meeting

In this context, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation revealed - on Tuesday - that "a secret security meeting was held between officials from the Palestinian security services and Israeli officials."

Kan added that two officials in the Israeli security apparatus, "one from the army and another from the Shin Bet," met recently with Palestinian Minister of Civil Affairs Hussein al-Sheikh, and director of the Palestinian intelligence service, Majed Faraj, to contain the escalation in the West Bank.

During the meeting, Sheikh and Faraj made it clear to the Israeli side that the Palestinian Authority "cannot work effectively after the Israeli army enters the cities of the West Bank every night to arrest and kill Palestinians."

Israeli officials responded that "the current security situation in the West Bank is unacceptable to us."

A military statement stated that an exchange of fire took place in the area with two Palestinian gunmen, and that the occupation soldiers were able to attack and neutralize them, as he put it.

The incident comes at a time when Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid chaired a meeting with the leaders of the army and security services, to assess the security situation, and concluded that the region is heading towards more escalation, especially during the month of the Jewish holidays, which will begin in the last week of September.

Last March, the occupation army launched a military operation in the West Bank, which it called "breaking waves." Since then, Israeli soldiers have stormed Palestinian cities, villages and camps at night to carry out arrests.

Earlier this month, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi said - in a written statement - that 1,500 Palestinians had been arrested so far since the start of the military operation.

The Israeli security establishment fears the explosion of the security situation in the occupied West Bank, in light of the continued killings, arrests and raids carried out by the occupation forces in the past few months, and the occurrence of armed clashes between Palestinian resistance and Israeli soldiers in some areas of the northern West Bank.
