EU Council President Charles Michel paid a one-day visit to Saudi Arabia and also met Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman.

The meeting on Tuesday in the port city of Jeddah was about strengthening trade and financial relations, an EU official said afterwards.

It was the first visit by a senior representative of the European Union to the strictly Islamic-ruled kingdom in a long time.

According to the information, topics were also the challenge posed by climate change, energy security and the transition to CO2 neutrality.

There should also be a regular exchange on global security issues and combating terrorism.

On the issue of human rights, which is considered problematic, it was said that these are "important for the EU and part of its DNA".

The dialogue about this is an "important tool in dealing with Saudi partners".

At the beginning of his visit, Michel took part in a roundtable discussion with Saudi women from the fields of politics, business, education, arts and media.

This was followed by a working lunch with, among others, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Trade Minister Majid bin Abdallah al-Qasabi, as well as a meeting with the Secretary General of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha.
