In the story of Napoleon Bonaparte, the first Emperor of the French, we often remember only the moments of glory.

With this account, the historian Virginie Girod reveals the exile of Napoleon I to Saint Helena, a lesser known period in the history of the statesman.

Following their victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the English decided to neutralize Napoleon by sending him to the end of the world, to a small island lost in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

What was the life of the deposed emperor like during the last six years of his life?

How does the one who reigned over an entire empire experience captivity?

In this episode of the podcast "At the heart of History" produced by Europe 1 Studio, discover in the voice of Virginie Girod what becomes of Napoleon I following his defeat in 1815.

Listen to Virginie Girod recount the life in exile of Napoleon I on the island of Saint Helena, between 1815 and 1821. In October 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte arrived in Jamestown, a small town with colonial houses, far from the splendor of the Palace of Fontainebleau to which he was accustomed.

To kill boredom, Napoleon receives many visitors.

He wants to seduce them, reveal his story to them so that people everywhere in England tell how badly he is treated by "the enemy".

With this unofficial propaganda, he hopes to make his big comeback in Europe... This story is a Europe 1 Studio production.

Subjects covered: History - Napoleon Bonaparte - Waterloo - Saint Helena - Empire
